Ruwanwelisaya – Sri Lanka
Ruwanwelisaya Temple is a an incredibly powerful symbol of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and history. The temple was built by an ancient Sri Lankan King more than 2000 years ago. The Stupa (i.e. the dome structure in the picture below) is one of the tallest monuments in the world, measuring at over a 100 meters, which is even more impressive given how ancient it is.
One of the Eight Sacred Ancient Sites of Sri Lanka, known as the ‘Atamasthana’, Ruwanwelisaya Temple is one of eight temples which are in the central region of Sri Lanka known as Anuradhapura, all built approximately 2000 years ago and rival the ancient pyramids of Egypt. Some of the eight have been restored to it’s full glory as Ruwanwelisaya has been. Whereas there are others who are still in their original form or under reconstruction.
If you do get a chance to visit Sri Lanka, seeing these amazing temples is a must – they are one of the most impressive pieces of ancient architecture anywhere in the world. It really shows how advanced the ancient Sri Lankan civilisation was!
